Portrait of Mark Cozart

Patient story

"Let's treat the root cause."

Mark Cozart — 68, construction business owner

Four cardiologists in a row told him he needed stents or bypass surgery. He had no symptoms. He wanted a 21st-century answer, not a 20th-century reflex.

When Mark first went to his primary care doctor for a routine checkup, he felt fine. He was 66, running a physically demanding construction business, climbing 20-foot ladders all day, and proudly able to outwork anyone on his crew. No chest pain. No shortness of breath. No warning signs.

His doctor casually asked, "Have you ever had your heart checked?" Mark said no. That one question started what he calls "the boulder rolling down the mountain."

He was referred to a cardiologist. Then another. Then another. Four cardiologists in a row reviewed his standard tests and all delivered the same urgent message: you're at high risk, you need invasive procedures, you're wasting time if you don't get stents or bypass surgery now.

Each visit felt more dire. Mark remembers the mental whiplash clearly: "I felt great walking in. But once they labeled me 'sick,' I started feeling sick. My whole life slowed down." Still, something didn't add up. How could a man with no symptoms, working hard every day, suddenly be near death with only one option: major surgery?

A friend told him about ClearCardio and Dr. John Osborne. Mark was intrigued by the idea of treating the root cause of heart disease, not just snow-plowing blockages and laying new pipes.

At ClearCardio he went through the full cardiac CT plus AI analysis. For the first time, he saw his arteries in microscopic detail. The results were clear: he did have plaque, including soft, vulnerable plaque, and his disease was real and measurable — Stage 3 on ClearCardio's 0–3 scale. But there were no critical blockages demanding emergency surgery.

Instead of being rushed to the cath lab, Mark was given a precise, personalized plan to attack the disease itself. Dr. Osborne explained the difference between the mechanical quick fix — stents and bypasses that may relieve symptoms but do not cure the disease — and the root-cause hard fix: changing the biology of the plaque with diet, exercise and modern medications, and tracking it over time.

Mark chose the hard fix. He started getting up at 4:30 a.m. to walk and work out. At first it was once or twice a week when he felt like it. Then he pushed himself to do more, turning it into a true routine. He cleaned up his diet. He stayed tobacco-free. Under Dr. Osborne's guidance he added a state-of-the-art cholesterol-lowering regimen.

Within a year everything began to shift: his LDL dropped below 50, his blood pressure stabilized around 116/72, he lost weight, gained muscle and felt his energy return. Most importantly, repeat CT + AI scans showed his dangerous plaque burden starting to recede instead of silently growing.

Today, at 68, Mark says he feels better than he did at 40. "A year and a half ago, I wasn't sure I'd see 68. Now I feel like I can live to 100." He avoided unnecessary surgery. He gained clarity instead of fear. And he now has a cardiology team focused on one thing: treating the root cause and proving, year after year, that his disease is moving in the right direction.
